Statement of Music Philosophy

Music is an important discipline that serves as a form of self-expression and source of enjoyment throughout life. For students, music develops self-confidence, discipline, and a commitment to personal growth. It builds group and collaborative relationships, inspires a motivation to learn, and provides a sense of accomplishment for students as they progress through their studies.

I believe that all students should have access to music education and opportunities to create, collaborate, and explore the Arts. In my experience, effective music instruction involves facilitating activities that engage students in the process of creating music and presenting their work in a variety of ways. Students learn and absorb music fundamentals through the performance, creation, and analysis of music and by applying musical concepts in authentic ways. Students also benefit greatly from experiencing music as a group and by learning from their peers.

As an instructor, I choose musical content that develop skills methodically and that are age and developmentally appropriate. Musical repertoire should challenge advanced students, while accommodating beginners who desire to learn an instrument and be part of an ensemble experience. I also believe in exposing students to diverse repertoire that considers the vast spectrum of music from around the world. This allows students to learn fundamental musical concepts while making important cross-cultural connections that will inform their worldview.

As a music educator, I can help students realize their potential by establishing a foundation of music fundamentals and technique. By involving students in the processes of listening, analysis, and reflection, they will gain a deeper understanding of the design of music, its cultural and historical relevance, and the motivations behind composers' work. By engaging students in reflective activities throughout the learning process, they will be able to chart their growth as composers and musicians, form their musical identity, and take ownership of their learning. Ultimately, my goal as a music educator is for students to continue to study, experience, and enjoy music throughout their lives and to strengthen their sense of community through the collective experience of music.
